ombre

this hair trend is all over the runways and hollywood and i jumped on the wagon.
i've been giving Heidi, of salon CARU, pictures of girls with roots for years now.
and somehow, finally, there is actually a method to the madness.
she ombre'd my hair last night and iiiii love it.
it's a genius dye job.  i won't have roots in a few months, because i have them already.
she just foiled all the ends to be lighter than the rest and filled in to give me color underneath.
so happy with the results.

UPDATE: see my other post on even more ombre, here.

(ok ok, well maybe not today.  who has ever heard of it being 75 out at the end of october?!)  i don't like it.

mad about MAD MEN

my move into the city only meant giving up one thing that was hard to deal with.  cable tv.  specifically, MAD MEN.  i'm obsessed.  and still haven't seen much of the 4th season as i moved just after the 3rd episode.  i cannot wait to finally see what happens.
stumbling upon these pictures at rollingstone.com was a treat and i can't stop revisiting these images.  i love how you can tell the cast isn't in character between takes.
and i would give anything to be in that closet with racks and racks of the show's clothing...

the new table

so as you all know i've been hunting for a table recently that would fit in my kitchen/living room corner.  well, i found one!  and it's perfect.
my cousin and i went to the brooklyn flea a few gorgeous saturdays ago.  i was excited thinking i could find something that would work.  walked right in... and towards the first booth... and there it was.  made of reclaimed wood on a base of metal piping.  sound familiar?  if so, that would be because it works perfectly with the custom shelves i had installed that are right above the table as well as in the bedroom.  (that post is here)
this table was also custom made by a man in brooklyn who always has pieces at the brooklyn flea.
i couldn't be happier.  check out your local fleas for similarly amazing finds.

sweet oversized dresses

these oversized dresses are gorgeous. the layers. the embroidery.
i love the heels with the first look while the flats work with the second.
it's also interesting to me that the first pic was taken in cali and the bottom in milan.

hippie chic

it's overcast here in new york.  these images suit today perfectly.  which explains my wearing mostly black today.  i'll have to post on the new clog boots i purchased.  i've discovered comfy boots with a heel and couldn't be happier.
back to this post...
love how boho chic these girls are.

cuffed shorts for fall?

i'm super excited about fall.
layers and scarves and jackets and sweaters and boots.
switching from iced coffee to hot coffee. and spiced lattes.  ahhh!

but.  the fall weather hasn't fully set in yet. grrrr.
especially for my southern readers.
i shouldn't be posting about shorts right now, but the girls below look great for those not so chilly days without looking too summery. even adding a cardigan and scarf would look so cute.  done and done.

custom is the new vintage

if i were to go out and purchase everything i envisioned for the new space...even as small as it is...it would have cost me loads of money and i know it wouldn't be exactly what i want.  keeping myself and my wallet happy, i hired a friend to install some shelves and curtains.  i couldn't be happier with the results.
supplies were inexpensive and you may even be in a position to do the labor yourself.  in my case, hiring someone who knew what they were doing made a lot of sense.

i'm a huge fan of reclaimed wood furniture and vintage items.  i pulled some ideas from other blogs that i love and am completely happy with what brandon came up with.  i mentioned L brackets for the wooden shelves.  he came up with plumbing piping.  i made room for food in my small kitchen cabinets by moving my pottery and dishes to the shelves above my table.

it was important to me to build up the walls in my new space.  with high ceilings, i was able to add function to areas that were bare when i moved in.

we took this idea a step further and used the piping for the curtains to cover my closet as well.  i purchased an inexpensive natural fiber tarp to use as the curtain and just trimmed the bottom edge so it just sweeps the floor.

if you are in the NYC area and would like to have brandon do some custom work for you, please email him at blmichaels@gmail.com.  his website: eye want that

new york city living

a few weeks in and my apartment is actually coming together.  i still have a few more purchases to make, but most things are in place.  i'll be going to brooklyn flea this weekend and hopefully track down a small kitchen table.  when everything needs to be tiny size, things are harder to find.
here is what's going on so far:
the entry isn't much, but i found a place for my vintage burlap coffee bag and rug.
i love how the white washed mirror helps the living area look a bit larger.
this is half of my couch.  the chaise lounge piece is in storage, but this piece fits perfectly!  i was also thinking my coffee table would be too large but it fills the room in a good way.
my woodard sculptura chairs will go with the to-be-purchased dining table.  the custom shelves that hold my dishes and tv were put up by a friend.  more on that in the next post!
the bedroom is. um. small. but i love the new shelf above the bed.
my closet didn't have a door.  so we made one.  more on that later.  i love how the bench i made looks at the end of the bed.
the computer desk will eventually be replaced by a smaller one...but will remain in front of the large bedroom window.
i found this shower curtain on sale at anthropologie.  it goes really well with the vintage marble bathroom.
