artist: adam s doyle

a friend of mine has a few gallery exhibitions opening this week and i wanted to share his work.
i love how unique his brush stroke is.
while so simple and uncontrived, there is an incredible amount of detail.

his own words here on his recent work:
In response to the tragedy in the Gulf, I've been painting animals afflicted with the oil in a manner that encourages us to be mindful of our mark on the natural world. These birds as well as a few coyote pieces will be featured.

be sure to visit adam's website and online store

margaritas, tacos & best friends

there isn't much better than good food and best friends.
i made margaritas for sunday brunch this weekend.
they paired perfectly with a few cilantro egg and black bean tacos.
this was my first time making fresh margaritas and they were delicious.
find my recipes for both below...

fresh margaritas
4 lemons
4 limes
agave tequila
1 tbsp agave syrup
several drops of real orange extract
sea salt
rose's sweetened lime juice
lime slice for garnish

makes 4ish drinks

juice the lemons and limes. pour into a small glass pitcher and stir. add just enough tequila to the pitcher to double the amount of liquid and stir. add just a few small drops of orange extract and agave syrup. add ice and stir until chilled.
pour a small amount of rose's sweetened lime juice onto a small saucer.
grind sea salt over another small saucer.
dip rim of glass into rose's lime juice. then into salt, pressing firmly so salt will stick.
fill glass with ice. strain margarita mix over ice. garnish with lime and serve immediately.

cilantro egg and bean tacos
8 corn tortillas
4 eggs
1 cup cilantro leaves, roughly chopped
1 can black beans
2 ripe avocados
2 tbsp white onion, diced
1 lime, juiced
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
authentic salsa
hot sauce
salt and pepper to taste

serves 2

in a bowl, halve, pit, and smash both ripe avocados with a fork. add 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro leaves, the juice of 1/2 a lime and 1 tbsp diced onion. add salt and pepper to taste. mix well and let cool in the fridge.
black beans.
in a small saucepan, simmer beans over low heat.
cilantro eggs.
heat evoo over med heat in saucepan. crack 4 eggs into a small bowl. add 1/4 cup cilantro leaves, salt and pepper. stir well. add to saucepan and stir until just cooked.
for each taco, use 2 tortillas so they won't fall apart. add beans and eggs. top with salsa, guacamole, onion, hot sauce, remaining cilantro and lime.

DIY reclaimed wood furniture

this post is exciting for me and i've been planning it for a while.
i was inspired to build my own bench after realizing the giant ikea cube housing my tv, books and various randoms was way too large for my small apartment. i knew i wanted a simple bench but the pieces i found were out of my price range.
after a little online idea was coming to life.
boards and beams, in fairfield, new jersey uses reclaimed and found wood to custom build unique pieces for the home. i stopped by one afternoon and was helped by the owner, steve. he had a few raw slabs ready for me to see and i picked a piece of walnut that matched my dimensions.
a few days later i picked up the fabricated piece. steve did such a great job and it turned out better than i had imagined.
i ordered the legs for the bench from these metal legs look great because of their simple industrial design. once i found everything i needed, assembly was easy and my living room feels much larger and more like me with this smaller unique piece.

the cords and wires will soon be wrapped
in a natural twine to help disguise them

the baskets below help organize and hide
my magazines and dvds
